New show at Moore College sets up shop with Philly Artblog, fills galleries with budget-friendly finds

At a time when so many art schools are struggling, Moore College of Art presents a special exhibition celebrating creative enterprise, where every object on display is for sale. 🖼️🤑 This fall their Galleries of Art + Design present an exciting variety of original works by Philly-based artists: paintings, posters, sculptures, pottery, stained glass, and more – priced to sell, because that’s the point!

Everything in this show is for sale.

By purchasing a piece, customers become collaborators with artist-entrepreneurs in a visual/commercial/experiential compilation. 🤯 This overarching theme activates distinct exhibits that are basically different art shops set up to invite browsing, conversation, and (ideally) a retail transaction. Beside every work of art, bright green sales tags list title, artist, and sales price.

If you see something you like, simply pluck its tag and a cashier will coordinate pickup/shipment in mid-December (after the show closes on 12/7). The majority of proceeds go directly to the artists, and then  Moore’s consignment fee helps support youth art programs.

🖼️🛍️ Shop the Show! 🛍️🗿

Forget everything you know about pop-ups and art fairs, with their kooky clutter. The vibe here is seamless and purposeful, with lots of space and light to drink everything in. There’s a whole wall of stunning paintings for sale when you first walk in off the street; more hang along a hallway toward two distinct marketplaces, Price Lists & Placements (curated by Moore College) and The Artblog Art MKT, by our friends at WHYY/NICE, Philly ArtBlog.

Between them both, the variety of styles, mediums, and messaging is truly remarkable – as are the prices, with quite a few works at or even under $100. Like quirky clay miniatures in lifelike detail, and big funky prints of iconic South Philly signage. Artblog’s Art MKT also has comics and merch, including hats, totes, and super-soft graphic tees.

Their 41-page Art MKT catalog is just a fraction of the great works you’ll discover in Moore College’s airy, energizing layout. In addition to serving as a shop and gallery, the exhibition is also a venue for public programming on art as a business, and the importance of artists in creative economy for all of us.

💃🪩 And it’s a great place to party, too! Artblog turns 21 this November 2nd with a birthday cake social in the Art MKT, from 4pm to 6pm. Come early for a Zine workshop with Artblog illustrators Beth Heinly and Oli Knowles (1pm to 3pm). All welcome to join the celebration for the city’s favorite grassroots art platform since 2010. 🥳🎉🎂

➕ More Than Meets the Eye  👁️

A strong arts scene is good for everyone in Philadelphia — not just artists. Here’s why:

  1. Jobs and Small Businesses: Artists are small business owners. When you support them, you help create jobs and grow local businesses. This boosts our city’s economy and keeps neighborhoods vibrant.
  2. Tourism and Local Spending: Art events, galleries, and shows attract tourists and locals alike. When people come to see art, they also spend money in restaurants, shops, and hotels, which helps businesses all over the city.
  3. Community Identity: Art helps tell the story of who we are as a community. It reflects the history, culture, and creativity of Philadelphia, making our city unique and helping us feel connected to each other.
  4. Education and Innovation: Creativity encourages problem-solving and new ideas. When we support artists, we help inspire the next generation of thinkers, doers, and innovators in all areas of life, not just the arts.
  5. Well-Being and Connection: Art improves our mental health and well-being. It gives us a way to express ourselves and understand others. A city that supports art is one that values the well-being of its people.

Three cheers for a brighter, more creative future for Philadelphia!

With holiday shopping right around the corner, here’s a special opportunity to contribute to – and participate in – Philadelphia’s local art scene. Best of all, it’s fun even just to look. 👀🙌
