Meet the new Jefferson University!

On June 29, Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University formally announced their official combination. The name for the combined institution, which will be the fifth largest in Philadelphia, is Jefferson University.

The Honors Programs will be in the newly formed Philadelphia University Honors Institute. All existing academic programs and degrees from both universities will continue and many will be expanded.

But what about athletics? Jefferson hasn’t had an intercollegiate team since the 1930’s. New uniforms for the Jefferson teams, which will still be called the Rams in a nod to PhilaU, are in the works.

Herb Magee, the legendary men’s basketball coach at PhilaU, was on hand for the ceremony. When asked about the merger, he said,  “I know one thing, with my first victory next year, I will become the all-time leading wins coach in the history of Jefferson University.”
