Spirits in the Spotlight

Quise Freeman and musical guests conjure greatness on stage and IRL

It’s not Halloween yet but Quise Freeman wants us to think about ghosts, about the energy we may leave behind, and the vibes we send off into the world. A local hip hop artist and community-builder, Quise’s summer concert series, Ghostly Presence, has been packing the house at The Fire, featuring big talents like Dell-P, Extra Kach, DJ Top Choice, and many others (including stand-up). “I’m so proud to highlight these artists,” Quise told us, “We all share the same vision about overcoming and uplifting.”

This may be Quise’s first time producing a concert series on his own, but performances have come together with almost supernatural smoothness. Indeed, he’s had a transcendent relationship with music since the death of his mother in 2020, after a long struggle with illness. Music helped Quise deal with his overwhelming grief – through music, he connected with her incredible spirit of resilience and pride. His music seeks to pass along that strength and encourage fans to dream big.

A powerful, positive showcase, Ghostly Presence can also be intense. Quise’s last performance of his song “Mama Said” literally brought the room to tears. “To feel that audience connection was beyond incredible,” he said. “Of all this tour’s ‘wow’ moments, that was so special to me personally.” Ultimately, these shows are a celebration of life and the human spirit! Quise and his headliners dare us to dream of a better world – and rise up in it.

We all have great power to share the best of ourselves, and make our mark on the world. Defiantly, if needed. If certain people don’t want to see who we are, or hear what we have to say, OK, but they’ll still feel us. We’ll still be here, reaching for our due. We have a right to fight for our dreams.     ––  Quise Freeman, “Quise to Life” (July, 2022)
