For many, Roots Picnic is about the music. It’s the anticipation of seeing favorite artists, reconnecting with friends, and celebrating Black culture in one of Philadelphia’s most iconic spaces. But for fashion enthusiasts, the festival grounds are something else entirely: a runway.
This year’s Roots Picnic was filled with style stories told through oversized silhouettes, vintage references, statement accessories, and intentional details. While trends certainly made an appearance, what stood out most was the individuality behind each look.
From South Philly cool to artistic streetwear and ’90s nostalgia, attendees used fashion to introduce themselves before saying a word. Here’s what some standout festivalgoers had to say when I asked them: What’s your aesthetic?
AS SEEN ON THE GREEN
@EJ215: The Nostalgic Curator
A tied scarf under a baseball cap instantly sets this look apart, while mirrored aviators, relaxed workwear, and classic Converse-style sneakers give it an effortless throwback feel. Even the patterned shirt peeking out beneath the sweatshirt adds another layer of personality.
For EJ215, personal style reflects the influences that shaped him growing up.
“My personal style is a melting pot of things that inspired me as a child, mainly our urban culture,” he said. “Nas, Ye, The Fresh Prince, and the everyday dope boy in my neighborhood.”
Comfort was key for his Roots Picnic look, but personality still came through. “I knew I was going to be there for a while, and I wanted to show my personality through my outfit.”
His aesthetic traces back to the decade that continues to inspire countless fashion lovers. “The ’90s are where everything started with me. From sports to hip-hop, film, and fashion, it all influenced my style.”
@tywilder44: Festival Style
A vibrant emerald green pleated blouse paired with oversized olive culottes creates a bold yet effortless silhouette. Finished with a red headscarf, metallic sneakers, and statement accessories, the look blends comfort with confidence—perfectly capturing the spirit of festival dressing.
@President_raigan: The Storyteller
Instead of relying on bold colors or logos, this look lets shape and texture do the talking. Flowing drapes, soft neutrals, metallic accents, and a structured handbag come together like a carefully composed work of art.
For President Raigan, fashion is less about trends and more about creating a personal language. “I don’t really consider myself an artist, but fashion is probably the closest thing I have to an artistic medium.”
Through textures, silhouettes, and styling choices, she brings together inspiration, taste, and individuality. “The best compliment I can get isn’t, ‘I like your outfit.’ It’s, ‘That’s so you.'” For Raigan, true style isn’t driven by labels or popularity—it’s about developing a unique point of view.
@brooksthaeducator: The Culture Keeper
The dark base keeps the look sharp, while the patterned short-sleeve shirt, oversized shades, crossbody bag, and matching bandana details add movement without breaking the mood. Classic sneakers are grounded and festival-ready.
Inspired by hip-hop icons and classic menswear, Brooksthaeducator described his Roots Picnic aesthetic in two words: “Biker Boy.” His all-black ensemble nodded to Jay-Z, but with his own signature touch.
Drawing inspiration from Jay-Z, Fabolous, and the fashion of the ’90s and early 2000s, his look proves that some influences never go out of style.
@thebelairofhair: Western Remix
Western style meets streetwear in this standout ensemble featuring a white cowboy hat, layered turquoise jewelry, a leopard-print Adidas jersey, and cow-print shorts. The mix of textures, prints, and statement accessories creates a fearless look that celebrates individuality and festival fashion.
@Mrpuzzlehearts: The Statement Maker
A bold graphic bowling shirt sets the tone, while a golden headwrap and classic denim carry the warm color palette from head to toe. Vintage-inspired details make the outfit memorable without feeling overdone.
Jason, known online as @Mrpuzzlehearts, keeps his style “bold, loud, but not over the top.”
He balances strong pieces with understated accessories, creating looks that command attention without overwhelming the eye. “Personal style expresses who you are,” he said. “Your fashion is the first interaction when you meet someone.”
Inspired by tastemakers like Wale and Fabolous, Jason embraces the freedom and creativity that Roots Picnic fashion encourages. “You either stand out, shine, and be remembered, or you fade into the background and be forgotten.”
@rickybphilly: The Effortless Minimalist
A coral hoodie brings the color, while jean shorts, white socks, sneakers, and a baseball cap keep the rest of the look easy. It’s a simple festival fit, but the bright hoodie makes sure it doesn’t disappear into the crowd.
Comfortable, polished, and approachable, Ricky’s style philosophy centers on authenticity.
“The word ‘picnic’ made me think jean shorts right away,” he said. “Since I knew it’d be chilly, I paired them with a bright coral hoodie that matched my colorful sneakers.”
Influenced by contemporary menswear, his style sits somewhere between elevated basics and easy everyday wear. “Fashion reflects who you are before you ever speak. I like to fit in while still standing out.”
@tony_escobaz: The 90s Hip-Hop Revivalist
A charcoal graphic T-shirt served as the centerpiece of the outfit, paired with light-wash denim, neutral-toned sneakers, a classic New York Yankees cap, and sleek sunglasses. The combination felt nostalgic while remaining fresh and modern.
When asked to describe his personal style, he kept it simple: “I’m from Queens—very ’90s inspired, hip-hop style I would say. I try to stay hip and edgy.” Rather than building the outfit around multiple statement pieces, he let one item lead the way.
“I built the look around the shirt. It was a dark gray, which is a pretty hard color to match with, but the jeans and sneakers fit perfectly and brightened it up. I got a lot of compliments that day.”
This a reminder that great style doesn’t always come from doing the most—it comes from knowing how to build a cohesive look around one standout piece.
@Floydworld: Individual Style with Festival Friends
Three distinct aesthetics come together in one frame, showcasing the diversity of personal style at Roots Picnic.
From a bright monochromatic orange set with sporty sneakers and a denim crossbody, to a vintage-inspired graphic band tee paired with distressed denim, to a colorful plaid strapless maxi dress styled with oversized hoops and a denim shirt tied at the waist, each look reflects a unique personality while capturing the relaxed, expressive spirit of festival fashion.
@dominic_patrick: The Artistic Visionary
A tied button-down, bright headwrap, matching socks, and round sunglasses make this outfit worth a second look. Relaxed workwear pieces provide the foundation, while unexpected styling choices keep your eye moving from top to bottom.
As an R&B artist and designer, Dominic Patrick sees fashion as an extension of his creativity. “I try to represent my artistry everywhere I go.”
Drawing from Asian streetwear, classic menswear, and women’s fashion, his aesthetic is an intentional blend of influences. “I dress for the day I want to have, not how I feel in the moment.”
After learning to sew at 17, fashion became a way for him to explore, experiment, and evolve. “People loved seeing a young person taking risks and exploring, so I explore.”
@thekitoyourstyle: Vintage Flair
A patchwork plaid maxi skirt brings color and movement to this festival-ready look, while a vintage Dennis Rodman graphic tee adds a nostalgic, streetwear edge. Thoughtfully layered accessories and a compact bowling bag—decorated with personalized charms—prove that practicality and personality can go hand in hand. The result is a look that’s equal parts expressive, functional, and unmistakably unique.
@bobbyjames: The Cultural Classicist
Clean stripes, tailored shorts, slim sunglasses, and bright white sneakers prove that a few well-chosen pieces can do all the talking. The yellow graphic adds just enough contrast to keep the look playful.
Bobby James describes his style as effortless, timeless, and rooted in culture. Growing up inspired by rappers and neighborhood style icons, he now blends ’90s hip-hop influences with classic menswear.
His Roots Picnic outfit was inspired by an unexpected source: Waldo. “When I decided on that sweater, I asked myself, ‘What would Waldo wear if he went to Roots Picnic?'”
For Bobby, style is deeply personal. “It’s how I express myself emotionally and politically. It’s always evolving as I grow and travel.”
@thefreshlegend: The Community Champion
Clean black layers let the details do the talking. Thin contrast piping, subtle embroidery, and a streamlined silhouette keep the look understated, while proving you don’t need loud colors or oversized logos to stand out.
For @thefreshlegend, supporting independent designers is central to his aesthetic. “I’d rather wear local clothes than designer clothes.”
His Roots Picnic look featured athleisure pieces from @iamkalyung, prioritizing comfort and practicality while staying true to his South Philly roots. “We try to be plain, calm, but still cool.”
For influencers and creatives alike, he believes style speaks before words ever do. “Nowadays, you always have to be Instagram-ready.”
@kobikobe: Artful Streetwear
An oversized orange floral button-up steals the spotlight in this playful festival look. Styled with wide-leg pants, sporty sneakers, and eye-catching accessories, the outfit embraces bold color, personality, and creative self-expression.
@Kellynceleste: The Confident Maximalist
A flowing white dress keeps things cool and effortless, while a printed headscarf, cat-eye sunglasses, and a compact black backpack add personality without weighing the look down. Soft fabrics and practical accessories make this festival-ready from head to toe.
Kellyn Celeste describes her style as bold and intentional, building each look around what makes her feel confident in her body. “I look for certain cuts and shapes that I know will look good on me, then add lots of gold jewelry and a fun nail design.”
For Roots Picnic, she challenged herself to try a new silhouette while staying cool and comfortable. Inspired by the ’90s, her style embraces gold jewelry, lip liner, long nails, and animal prints.
“Personal style truly means wearing what I think looks good on my body and feeling confident in it. If I like it, it’s personal.”
BEYOND THE FIT
At Roots Picnic, the best-dressed attendees weren’t chasing trends—they were telling stories. Whether inspired by hip-hop legends, community culture, contemporary menswear, or personal journeys, each look reflected something deeper than clothing alone.
