Let the Good Times Roll

Hit the road for biking adventures and a traveling beer garden at McMichael this Summer.

April 6th kicks off Open Streets Season on MLK Drive.  Saturday and Sunday thru October from 7am to 5pm, the road closes to vehicular traffic and folks take advantage of smooth flat pedaling from here to the Art Museum (a nice flat 8.5 mile loop – voted the country’s Best Urban Trail in 2015).

Stunning views along the river! You’ll go under bridges, past public art and historic properties. Once you reach the Parkway, you can pick up any number of trails to parks, neighborhoods, college campuses, tourist destinations… If it’s been awhile since you’ve biked in Philly, you’ll be surprised at how many protected paths have popped up, including miles of boardwalk they’re adding to every year. And a new $1.49 million grant announced for the Schuylkill River Trail this March!

Have Tandem, Will Travel: Follow our Facebook & Instagram Stories as we explore the City by bike this spring/summer — including, for sure, several trips to Spring Arts where the craft beer flows freely and you can find delicious burritos as big as your head.

SAVE PARKS, DRINK BEER

Did someone say beer? Cheers to McMichael Park for being chosen as one of 2019’s Parks on Tap Locations (click for full schedule).

Block off the third week of August, when the City’s traveling beer garden creates an outdoor party oasis with fresh food, beer on tap, wine, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages and a variety of family-friendly activities & programming.

These engagements are hugely popular and draw large crowds from all over. A portion of all proceeds goes directly to the park, so let’s hope for an extra big turnout.

Don’t wait for August to check out Parks on Tap — this year’s schedule includes more than 20 locations, including nearby (and lovely) Historic Rittenhouse Town (May 1 – 5) and Germantown’s Fernhill Park (May 15 – 19). Of course Gorgas (July 31 – Aug 4) and the Belmont Plateau, too (June 12 – 16).

Parks on Tap at McMichael Park
August 21 – 25 (Weds to Sunday)
Henry & Midvale Aves
Dog-friendly, free admission, free on-street parking

PS Don’t forget about our own East Falls Beer Garden, happening every 3rd Thursday from May thru October.

Want MORE outdoor fun?

How about three Wissahickon trailheads you can walk to from East Falls (and West Germantown)! We’ve mapped them out as 3 – 5 mile loops that’ll take you back to where you started — with public parking nearby, in case you need it. Our handy guide makes it easy to explore this fantastic natural resource in our own backyard.

Philly neighborhoods are great for Sunday strolls, too. Everyone’s welcome on a NW Philly Pack Walk, no dog required –although they do add lots of fun. The Pack meets Sundays at 9:30am in McMichael Park (map), on the Midvale side, near the Turtle. We take a varied 45 min – 1 hour walk around the general area together, socializing dogs (and humans) since 2014.

And don’t forget: East Falls Farmers Market is like a little block party every Saturday with music, yoga, food trucks, family activities, workshops…. Plus produce and vendors, of course. From 10am -2pm  under the Twin Bridges, by a beautiful, bridge-strung stretch in the Schuylkill River. Just about the perfect location, with ample parking plus three great brunch spots: In RivaLe Bus and Trolley Car Café are right there, too.
